Private Lending

Every Sunday there was an ad in the newspaper that George Slaton was ready to lend. When I heard those stories I chalked that up to hyperbole from my Grandmother reminiscing on her Dad. When I decided to get into private lending I wanted to investigate these claims. I went to the library and I was incorrect it was not hyperbole but an underrepresentation.

Just as frequently as I heard stories about George I heard stories about my Grandfather on the other side, an unrivaled restauranteur who opened at least six restaurants in south Florida from Pizza Inn to Margarita y Amigas. He would tell stories of hay days in the restaurant and you could tell his happy place was a busy dining room. Both my Grandfathers as well as my Dad were young business owners. This influence made me ever the more likely to open a business myself.

While in college I started three companies and have since sold all of them some with more success than others but all valuable in the lessons they taught me. I dipped my toe in the entrepreneurial waters with The Palm Locals, A screen printing and embroidery shop Chris Pappas and I started in my freshman dorm which we sold this July. I expanded the breadth of my ventures senior year when Micah Droescher and I opened The Patch Boys, A drywall repair franchise we sold after two years. Just after graduation an investor group and I invested in opening three franchised Ellie Mental Heath clinics which we sold after build out just before opening earlier this year.

Some might criticize me and say owning a screen printing shop, drywall repair buisness, and mental health clinic sounds kind of crazy and lacks continuity. That is a valid criticism. I lacked a vision for my career. It was also probably biting off more than I could chew to start three businesses before graduating college all while working a full time job. These are some of the reasons I wanted to sell. After lots of time spent thinking, praying over, and discussing my options I came to the conclusion that I should limit myself to one discipline that I can master.

I began to search for what that discipline should be and it turned out it was staring me right in the face. It was what my family has been now doing for four generations. Not to mention my degree in finance and experience in the home buying world with my two years in insurance. When growing up I heard lots of talk about private lending and am able to lean on the expertise of my Dad when evaluating loans.

Private lending may be new to me but it is not to my family. My great grandfather began in this business almost a century ago and our family has been continuing that legacy ever since and I am eager to walk in the footsteps before me of entrepreneurship and private lending.
